SPIKE TOMAHAWK $1650.

Plains Indian Circa mid 19th Century

Recently acquired from an octagenarian Minnesota collector. This is an "as found" spike axe which has its original patina in all aspects. I believe this to be mid-19th Century mid western. There is a "W" stamped on one side of the blade and could stand for J. Wilson of Shadron Nebraska who is known to have made pipe tomahawks in the 19th century. See John Baldwin's "Indian War Clubs", page 85 #296. This spike axe, in addition to having a "W" stamped on the blade, has very similar neatness of construction aspect to the pipe tomahawk mentioned in Baldwin's book, which I owned at one time. The ash haft is original to the head and is neatly faceted (8 sided) from the head to the hand grip which is also 8 sided but raised all around by approximately 1/16 " and the haft then terminates in a carved diamond shaped "finial" measuring about 2 3/8" long by 1 7/8 inches wide. The early cast brass tack decoration is mostly intact. The missing tacks have been missing for a very long time. The tomahawk measures 24 3/8 inched long and the head is 9 inches from the tip of the spike to the blade's edge and the spike measures a full 4 inches. This is a great spike axe.

Condition:  Excellent as found. There are 14 tacks missing and 24 still intact.
